Man trying to break into car with a screwdriver in a Back Bay alley smacks owner in the head with it, police say

Boston Police report arresting a Hyde Park man after he attacked the owner of a car he was trying to break into in an alley behind Newbury Street yesterday evening.

Police say Jachai Edwards, 23, was busy trying to crack open a car parked in an alley between Newbury and Boylston streets, between Exeter and Fairfield streets shortly before 7 p.m. when the owner came upon him.

The suspect struck him over the head with the screwdriver and then attempted to steal the victim’s phone and car keys. The suspect then pushed the victim to the ground and fled on foot down the alleyway.

On arrival, officers located and stopped Edwards in the area of 304 Newbury Street and found him to be in possession of two screwdrivers and a pair of wire cutters. Officers also located a screwdriver next to the victim’s motor vehicle.

Edwards was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, armed assault with intent to rob, breaking and entering a motor vehicle in the nighttime and possession of burglarious tools, police say.
