Chelsea man was just chilling in an East Boston park with a loaded gun in his fanny pack, police say

Boston Police report the arrest of a 19-year-old Chelsea man early this morning, not because he was sitting in the stands at American Legion Playground in East Boston, even though he shouldn't have been, but because of the loaded firearm they say he had with him.

Police say gang-unit officers arrived at the Glendon Street side of the park around 12:30 a.m. and spotted two guys sitting in the ballfield stands:

Officers were aware of the City of Boston’s Park Rules which indicate that all public parks close at dusk unless otherwise noted. Upon approaching the two males, the officers observed that the suspect appeared to have a ‘fanny pack’ hanging across his chest and that upon seeing the officers approaching, he began to try and slide it towards his back. As the officers began speaking with the suspect, he quickly used his arm to pin the pack against his side. Believing that the suspect may be armed, officers performed a pat frisk and immediately detected the presence of the firearm. The suspect was placed in custody without incident at which time the officers recovered a loaded Taurus 38 Special revolver from inside the pack. Officers continued their investigation and determined that the suspect was wanted on two outstanding arrest warrants sought out of East Boston Court on charges of Larceny from the Person and Breaking and Entering.

A second teen at the scene, even younger, was released to the custody of his parents, police say.

If you can see the cops, they can see you.
Just sayin'.

Maybe the court won't be so anxious to let him out this time. After all, he's got two outstanding.

I do see the bit about two arrest warrants, but nothing about him e.g. being out on bail. Maybe I missed something, though.

I say this as someone who had a fanny pack pretty much attacked to his.. well fanny for most of the early 90s.

Thank you fashion police for spotting out atrocious fashion mishap and taking appropriate action to get it off our streets. Oh and great you found a gun too.

Like Vanilla Ice & Shoulder Pads.. let's leave fanny packs in the 1990s.

Thank goodness Boston Fashion is being given priority here!

None of these young men will ever
make the social register wearing "fanny packs".
If Martha Stewart caught word of this, they'd be laughed right off Newbury St!
The humiliation alone should reform them!

If Boston youth get shot in disreputable attire
let it teach them a lesson in attaining social values!

This was a good experience for the younger bench-sitter to learn what not to do to get busted.

Have a record, carry a loaded firearm, occupy an observable place when forbidden.

These can be resolved with a little forethought.

Does anyone else have an issue with this?

Parks closing at dusk is kind of ridiculous, especially in winter where it would mean you can't walk through a neighborhood park after 4 pm.

This sounds like a classic stop-and-frisk. Cops can claim someone was acting nervously, holding their bag, not holding it, or whatever, and who would be able to challenge it?
