Police charge two for using power tools to break into an East Boston apartment - and one for an earlier $240,000 holdup outside a check-cashing place

Boston Police report one of two men arrested on charges they tried to break into an apartment at 212 Waldemar Ave. in Orient Heights yesterday was also charged for his alleged role in holding up the owner of a Meridian Street check-cashing store as he arrived from his bank with $240,000 in cash on June 7.

Police say officers responding to a report of two guys using power tools to break into an apartment at 212 Waldemar Ave. in Orient Heights around 1:20 p.m. on Saturday found Timothy Deconinck, 55, of Malden at the scene "with a drill, drill bits, and other tools attempting to gain entry to an apartment." He did not meekly give up, however, police say he attacked at least one officer.

Police say officers looked around the area for the other guy and not long after spotted and arrested William Cataldo, 59, of Saugus.

Deconinck was initially charged with possession of burglarious tools, attempted breaking and entering, defacing property, assault and battery on a police officer and resisting arrest for the Waldemar Avenue incident, police say, adding he was then further charged with unarmed robbery of a person over 65, subsequent offense, carjacking and impersonating a police officer for the Meridian Street holdup.

Cataldo was charged with possession of burglarious tools, attempted breaking and entering, defacing property and resisting arrest, police say.

Innocent, etc.

Imagine grabbing a cool quarter million in cash and still feeling the need to do a plain old b & e a week later. Makes you wonder what they expected to find in the Eastie place that would justify the risk.

Just guessing. But the stick-up for $240k wasn’t random, and I doubt this was a plain- old B-E.

The ages of the suspects and victim are also pretty similar. Gotta be a connection.

More cash.
These crooks have inside info.

My guess is the 240,000 was already spoken for .. but there are still a-lot dumb people out there so i guess it possible

Old habits die hard. Though the$250,000 is pretty impressive.
