The National Transportation Safety Board reported today that its initial findings from Friday's B Line crash showed that an outbound trolley traveling at 30 m.p.h. plowed into the back of a trolley going just 10 m.p.h. at Pleasant Street. Read more.

The National Transportation Safety Board announced this morning it "is investigating the July 30, 2021, collision of two Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) light rail trains on MBTA's Green Line near Boston, Massachusetts."
Prediction: The NTSB will issue a report that concludes the MBTA needs to equip the Green Line with a "positive train control system," just like it does after every Green Line collision.

Green Line crashes in 2008 and 2009 - one fatal - slowly spurred the MBTA to hire contractors to equip the nation's oldest subway line with a system that would automatically brake trolleys whose operators run red lights or seem about to smash into another trolley and who disregard audible alarms to stop. Of course the Green Line would pick one of the hottest days of the year, when more people are actually wanting to use it, to develop some sort of "power problem" that would shut the line downtown.

The Somerville Transportation Equity Partnership reports officials announced today that the Union Square stub line is now scheduled to open in December instead of October and that the main part of the extension is now scheduled to start up in May, rather than the previously announced December.

MBTA planners tomorrow will discuss potential new designs for the Green Line along between Brigham Circle and Heath Street and along Commonwealth Avenue with the goal to make the two branches more easily accessible to people with mobility issues. Read more.

Remember when it was about to get cancelled because it was going to cost too much? CommonWealth Magazine reports the project is now forecast to come in under budget, only in part thanks to $103 million in federal recovery aid for mass-transit projects and possibly enough so to let Cambridge and Somerville recover the $45 million they ponied up to keep the project going.

CommonWealth talks to MBTA General Manager Steve Poftak, who says the T will likely hire 80 to 120 new employees to roam bus lines and above-ground trolleys to make sure they're paying their fares. The new system could speed up buses and trolleys by allowing people to board through both front and rear doors, but will mean a level of trust that people are boarding in the back with actual CharlieCards. The new workers will make random spot checks to make sure people are doing that.

Chris in 02134 spotted some overhead-wire action on the Green Line on Beacon Street shortly before 11 a.m., about 45 minutes after the T reported "power problems" on the Beacon Street line were forcing it into bustitution between Coolidge Corner and Cleveland Circle.
