South Station
Coach Bolster was pretty alone in South Station at what used to be the height of morning rush hour today.
The Red Line is currently without power near South Station to let Boston firefighters and MBTA power workers deal with a smouldering fire from an electrical cable in the tunnel between South Station and Broadway.
Several hours after a brake-spasmed Green Line trolley filled Copley station with smoke, a Red Line train pulled the same stunt at Broadway, around 4 p.m., sending smoke down the tunnel and into the South Station subway stop.
Red Line service towards Alewife went into delay mode as T workers strove to make the brake-locked train disappear.
WCVB reports the first commutergates will be installed at North Station by next summer, followed by similar contraptions at South Station and Back Bay.

Our system is failing us daily. 6pm on a Tues; dozens of people wait in the rain as two full 7 buses pass them by. This doesn’t include dozens of people waiting at Melcher St and the BCEC outbound stops.
A train that died right outside South Station jammed up the tracks and meant delays of up to 20 minutes both inbound and outbound this morning, even after crews managed to push the beast into Fort Point Channel, or whatever it is they do in these more enlightened times with dead trains. Read more.
Boston Police are looking for whoever jumped the curb and demolished six or seven Bluebikes parked outside South Station early this morning.
Tweets from Keolis initially blamed delays on commuter-rail service out of South Station on "fire department activity," but the rail operator reported at 4:39 p.m.:
[A]pologies for the lack of communication. It appears the fire alarm went off in South Station which is causing delays across several trains.
An Amtrak police officer had probable cause to arrest an Amtrak worker at South Station in an argument turned shoving match over whether a woman with young children could board a train early, but the worker has the right to try to convince a jury the cop used excessive force once the worker was down on the ground and being cuffed, a federal judge ruled today. The MBTA is reporting delays on trains out of South Station due to another one of those upright derailments. NBC Boston has a photo of the cars in question - it might still be upright, but it's listing. NBC Boston also reports the cars derailed when two separate trains collided.
