Wouldn't a white picket fence just be so precious in the South End?

John Keith had a ball at last night's meeting of the South End Landmarks Commission, which approved a plan to turn a parking lot at the Hurley School into a soccer field (despite the outcry from nearby residents who had been parking their cars there overnight) - with the proviso the school raise funds for a classy picket fence instead of an oh-so-irritating chain-link fence (see South End parking smackdown).
He also reports on separate hearing on supposed plans for a hotel at Washington Street and Mass. Ave. that, at its current rate of progress, could actually open its doors by the end of this century.

Is the real issue parking vs. soccer field or is it that the neighborhood is changing from a more adult-oriented neighborhood to one of young families? I take no sides here. Just curious...
(Though I do think it's odd that the people who want parking are called yuppies and the people who want a soccer field for their kids are not, but maybe that's just me.)
Taxonomic Quandary
The South End becoming a neighborhood of young families? I'm jealous. They're yuppier than I on all counts (younger, more urban, more professional...)
It seems odd to call the people who want to pahk their cahs on the yahd yuppies, vs. those who want the kiddums to learn the jogo bonito. Seems to me that yuppies can have kids too. Folks wouldn't be able to afford to live there if they weren't professional, and they'd be unlikely to have kids if they weren't young.
A review:
Yuppies = Young Urban Professionals
DINKs = (being a subset of yuppies) Dual Income, No Kids
Guppies = Gay Urban Professionals.
I think the South End is fairly rich with guppies and probably DINKs too, therefore having a fairly low fertility rate in aggregate. And DINKs do tend to split for the burbs or at least peripheral neighborhoods upon their undinking. But there's a minority there interested in breeding and staying (and capable of affording it somehow). And for some reason I don't know of a term for those yuppies who _do_ have kids. Could someone find me a new term to resolve the taxonomic quandary? Yubbies, perhaps?
DINKs vs. Yuppies
Gareth, When DINKs undink, do you mean they have children? I guess I'm unclear then, what distinguishes a Yuppie married couple from DINKs. Once one enters into the bond of marriage, is one's Yuppie card revoked and said person automatically DINKed? In Chicago there are Trixies and Chads - perhaps a more appropriate and well-defined modern day term for Yuppies.
Subset
DINKs are a subset of Yuppies. Yuppies may be gay, straight, married, unmarried, have children or not. DINKs are married yuppie couples with two salaries and no kids. I was one once.
I'd never heard Trixies and Chads before. I guess they are kinds of Yuppies too.
But still, what do you call yuppies with kids? If they move to the burbs, they're no longer yUppies.
Trixies
More specifically, Lincoln Park Trixies.
something must be done about it
Thank you for the clarification. I suppose Trixie as a subset of Yuppie is too narrowly focused and thus misses the mark for the South End. Who is clever enough to come up with a new term for the purposes of our South End discussion?
Sthupbies
Well, I'll give it a shot.
Sthupbies: SouTH end Urban Professionals who have Bred
Proposed Terminology
Pugnips: Professional Urban Gay-Neighborhood-Invading Parents.

Hi there - actually, the bldg on the corner of Mass and Washington *used* to be a hotel - I think the future plans are up in the air, which is why it came up in the meeting (the current owner has been letting it sit there for years, and it's a beautiful (yet now blighted) building....
Parking vs. Soccer
Regarding the first reply, its plain and simple: people who value parking (to which they imagine they have an indelible right, despite the fact that its on someone else's, i.e, the school's, property) over school kids having an outdoor place to play soccer (on that very school's property) are yuppies. Entitled selfish yuppies. End of story.
