Central Square parking lot to become outdoor art, performance and dining center through October

Cambridge Day reports on plans for a pop-up to be called Starlight Square that will, among other things, let local performance spaces hold outdoor performances now that their indoor facilities are shut due to Covid-19.

Sounds great. But why for only 3 months? The virus is not going away in the fall and parking lots will forever be a terribly inefficient use of urban space.

Not many people will want to eat or watch live performances outdoors once we get past Veterans' Day. Plus, the materials may not be designed to survive winter weather. I hope this is something that can be easily dismantled, stored away, and rebuilt next April or May.

Germany has these month long "Christmas Markets" which are outside and have dozens of venders selling snacks, gifts, and drinks. They also sell mugs of warmed spiced wine which is great when it's cold. These markets are popular and most cities have them.

Boston weather is normally pretty tolerable until Xmas minus a few days of snow every often. It's Jan through April that it really sucks in this town.

If New Englanders were afraid of the cold, we wouldn't be so fond of skiing and snowboarding. Arts and live performances aren't for summer months only!

There's a difference between athletic activity, and sitting for extended periods watching a performance.

I'm fine with eliminating the public parking lots in Central Square, as long as Cambridge pays the MBTA to run buses as frequently as they ran in the era before the public parking lots were there.
