Bart Thompson noticed an incredibly deep sinkhole in Ronan Park, like maybe 40 feet deep. He reports Boston firefighters and police arrived after a 911 call to make sure nobody falls in.

If I fell into this, I wonder if I'd even be able to call 911 for help.

I had to go and check this out. As of this morning, the hole (with a well secured perimeter) was about 16' deep.

Another mystery is the crushed section of chain-link fence that surrounds the basketball court. It looks like it took a tremendous blow from above; it's not like some kid climbing on it could have bent these posts. And yet there are no trees within 200', no evidence of public works, and no light pole appear to have fallen on it.

My theory? Meteorites!
What is that device you are holding?

I did not know there was a hand-held device that you could point into a hole and it would tell you how deep it is.

They are common with contractors and real estate people for making quick measurements. About the size of a normal tape measure.
Meteorites don't work that way

Thanks for going out and taking a look! But I can't tell if you're joking about the metorites, so I'll err on the side of being pedantic. :-P
There would be an impact crater, not a hole like someone pushed their finger into a soft cake.
The fence was likely crushed by heavy equipment. A rapid impact would have broken off parts of it and left the rest standing upright. Perhaps a scissorlift fell over when someone was changing out the LEDs or sensor at the top of that light pole.

The fence was smashed in a recent storm when the lights for the baseball field blew over. The city has since removed all the lights surrounding the field.

Wow, thanks for the info; this is a big deal for the park. The funny thing is that I am at Ronan a couple of times week as I live down the street from it, and yesterday while I was focusing on the plywood covers and the hole, it didn't occur to me that the light posts themselves were missing! I surely won't miss the extreme light pollution from these stadium lights.

This kind of looks like a dug well - the old fashioned way for a household to get water. Perhaps someone removed the pump and thought that they filled it, but it failed 100, 200 years later?
