A little violence at a Boston high school
By adamg on Mon, 11/12/2007 - 11:33pm
This is where I'd posted a YouTube video (and linked to another) showing fighting at the high school. The videos have been taken down, and I've heard from an official at one of the schools there who raised the same objections you can read in the comments.

Not an appropriate handling of the videos
Adam,
You have a great site, and your coverage, selection and ability to bring important local news to people who are interested is second to none.
However, I don't think you should have posted these videos. You could instead have refered to their existence on "a popular video-sharing site", since those who want to find them will find them. However, linking to them is in poor taste. This is bad behavior, and shouldn't be advertised, condoned or supported. I mean, they don't show the streakers on Red Sox TV coverage for the same reason.
Poor taste, poor decision. I'd pull your links and clearly condemn the illegal and dumb actions of violent, brawling kids.
Keep up the otherwise great work. And feel free to pull this comment if you decide to clean up this posting.
Why I posted that
Good points, and, yes, I did think twice before posting this. I decided to put it up because I was kind of startled to see it a couple days after reading a BPD report on six non-students with knives arrested at the school (so what's going on there?) and because I spend a fair amount of time at the school in the spring (my daughter's in a community-center drama production there). So to me, at any rate, it seemed newsworthy. Yes, I could have done the "popular video-sharing site" thing, but that just seems to me something that would annoy people who, for whatever reasons, did want to see it - and it's not like you see the video unless you click on the image (hypocrisy much there? Yes, I did just that a few weeks ago, but then, it was just a gross photo of a dead rat in Somerville, no news value that I could tell).
But what do other folks think? Should I have posted the video?
Keep It.
If a reader is concerned by the content or the message another "view" will send, they shouldn't play it. Adam's made it clear what you will see in the video.
While the fact that this crap is viewed as entertainment in some circles, I don't think that's the intent of the post. It offers a nice little view into the life at West Roxbury High.
Not linking gross dead rat content is, however, an editorial policy I'm 100% behind.
Something like this is
Something like this is always a tough call. The video is grainy so it's pretty tough to make out faces. But if you look at the YouTube page and the comments, it's pretty clear some students or whoever know who the people are. I just hope the school's headmaster has seen this too. So I guess my answer is...I don't know ha. Sorry.
I agree that I would not
I agree that I would not have posted it, but in any event I have contacted the headmaster. I previously helped another school work with youtube to identify and remove the files from their servers. I'm sure the grapevine already got the clips a lot of hits over the weekend.
Videos are gone
So I've taken down the links.
