Hey, look what I got yesterday!

Gee, I guess the T's Customer Bill o' Rights on-time service guarantee really works after all! In the mail yesterday, I got a nice letter from Dan Grabauskas and a round-trip train fare reimbursement... for a one-hour delay that happened in January! Yes, Mrs. Calabash, more than 11 months ago! Good to know they're working on that backlog.

The nice letter hints at why it took so long:

We have reviewed your submission and verified that you are entitled to a complimentary fare based on your service being delayed by 30 minutes or more.

Of course, it's in the form of two one-way train tickets, and I have a pass, but never fear...

...you may redeem them for cash... at Back Bay, North Station and South Station ticket offices with the presentation of this letter and a valid photo ID during regular business hours within 90 days of the date indicated on this letter.

Nice of them to give me three months to redeem the tickets, since it took them twice as long to send them in the first place. The last dig is the best one, though:

We apologize for any inconvenience and frustration you may have experienced due to this delay in MBTA service...

An hour stuck on the Rte. 128 platform in single-digit cold? Pshaw! Think nothing of it.

...Thank you for your understanding as we were experiencing a delay due to Signal Failure.

OK, they're just making stuff up. We were delayed because the train in front of us broke down! How do I know? We pushed it into the station!! If they can't get it right, they should just apologize and move on; at this point, I'm surprised to get the money at all.

This is odd, because I got a refund Tuesday for a ride I took in early-to-mid September.

So I guess this means that either the T wants to save on bulk postage and just mail refunds all out at once, or they are getting refunds is completely deterministic.

Well, I guess its good that I might get refunded for a huge delay I had in October. Unfortunetly, the 4 delays I'm still owed for from October 2006 through March won't be refunded to me since I moved and my forwarding is just about to expire. Well, maybe they are in the mail now and I'll come in under the wire, but I'm still guessing I won't get refunds for last October at this point.

Eager to be proven wrong, though.

Yow. Seriously, I'd call them up. It might not accomplish anything, but at least I'd feel good chewing someone out.

Just as all forms of death can be attributed to heart failure, all delays on the T can be attributed to signal failure. After all, there was presumably a red light on the track when the train broke down.

I got 3 round trips, all in separate envelopes, earlier this week. Fortunately, this month I switched from my monthly pass to 12-ride commuter rail tickets.
