Keep Ellsbury

Dan Kennedy begins to despair of the winner-take-all annihilation mode of Boston/New York baseball:

... I'd rather see what the kids can do than land yet another proven star and pencil in a guaranteed (barring injury) 18 to 20 wins. ...

The Sox have enough pitching, despite the old mantra that "you can never have enough pitching."

We've got Beckett, Schilling, Dice-K, Lester, and Buchholz for a rotation. I'm willing to go with that. I'd rather keep the young position talent, rather than trade it away for a starter that I don't think we really need.

If you could switch Santana for Lester in that equation and dump Crisp and some players you have no idea about like Masterson...you wouldn't do it?

Dumping Crisp only *bolsters* your demand to see young talent play because it give Jacoby a full time spot in CF.

Lester, Crisp, 1-2 prospects...we only get better in that situation. Personally, I think any talk of Ellsbury is *purely* to make MN salivate and come back at Hank with a demand for more talent in the trade.

The way you present it, it obviously makes sense. My problem is parting with the younger position players - Ellsbury, Pedroia, or someone like them.

If the deal is Lester and Crisp and unknowns, I'd be a fool not to like it.

I completely agree. I think Pedroia is fully untouchable. We have no one who could fill the role within the organization (Cora? Yeah, right) and I don't even think there are many great 2B FA options right now.

I liked it better when Ellsbury wasn't tossed around as a chip. Made me feel safer..but then again, if we're going to see how crazy the Yankees are willing to go, we've gotta make sure they don't suspect they're just getting played out...or they'll back down their offer and get away for cheaper than we could potentially force out of them. It's not like Crisp isn't serviceable..but Ellsbury brings nearly the same defense and a MUCH bigger spark to the offense.

I could part with Buchholz instead of Lester if that was necessary to bring in Santana. I like the no-no and that's great for him and all, but that was only 1 game and we'll likely never see it again from him. You can't place loyalty on just one experience like that. I think he's got better stuff than Lester, so I'd rather see Lester walk than Buchholz, but if we needed to raise the stakes, I wish they'd started with "ok, Buchholz instead of Lester" than "ok, Ellsbury instead of Crisp".
