Jim Sullivan runs down his choices for First Night events, including Birdsongs of the Mesozoic with Oral Moses doing "Extreme Spirituals" at Emmanuel Church.
I agree. Other than the countdown in Copley, the entire thing is pretty blah. I had gone for quite a few years in a row (~2000-2004), but gave up.
The concerts/performers are not the greatest, the venues are often distant with overlapping timings all over the place to sort through. There is an extensive focus on kids' entertainment for many of the activities (I have no kids).
It's just not very all-encompassing or overwhelmingly impressive even after giving it a few go-arounds.
Stay away from the convention center to avoid the kid-focused events. The performances in the churches are worth checking out - good music in a beautiful and historical setting and often there is ample seating.

I like that First Night exists, but man, I have zero interest in ever checking it out.
Why?
Can you say more of what you don't like about this event?
