Puff, the magic manhole

Steam spouting manhole on Harrison Avenue

Puff, the magic manhole lived in the ground
And frolicked in the autumn mist on Harrison outbound
Little Jackie Paper loved that rascal Puff
And brought him chairs, and traffic cones, and other Southie stuff

John Hanzl videoed that rascal Puff this morning, on Harrison Avenue near the D-4 police station:

Yes, I realize the rhyme only works if you pronounce "Ave" to rhyme with "have" rather than to rhyme with "shmavenue." But if we can do it with Comm. and Mass., why not Harrison?

Either that, or

Puff, the magic manhole lived in the bend
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called the South End

Which doesn't work because that's obviously a straightaway, not a curve, alas.

Virginia S. O'Possum suggested just dropping the "Ave" and avoiding the issue altogether, and it works!

Um, yeah. You know when your instincts tell when something ain't right and safe? Don't drive that way and don't walk near it.

We should invite Comrade Xi if we want a clean safe city for a week.

See if Magoo is available to meet him at the airport.

But the Southie tag is just plain wrong. This ain't Southie. Halfway between Ink Block and BU Medical Center. With lots of new development we're calling Lego Land (tm).

Plain old South End, thank you.

Even with all my problems with neighborhood lines, I knew which neighborhood the manhole is in. Alas, I goofed with selecting the neighborhood in the dropdown list I use for that.

That said, the line still works, so I'll leave it in (since, as we all know, the South End is the only neighborhood where you're not allowed to save a space after a snowstorm and we all know how scrupulously all South Enders follow that rule, right?).

I think the southie part actually works. I mean, Puff is literally taking people’s space savers out of South Boston and basically gifting them to the South End. Can you imagine how absolutely nuts that will make the southie crew? Puff has a devious sense of humor…

Why does it puff like that?

There's some blockage in the line such as a defective valve or a water in the pipe. The steam builds up pressure until it pushes past that block and is visible at the surface. At that point the pressure falls and blockage resumes, cutting off steam at the surface for a moment.

CPAP machine?

Let sleeping dragons lie.
