Dan Miller turns to Cabernet in a plastic cup:
... Like when the commuter rail is delayed for the 114th time after a long, tiring day that includes a final sprint to the subway just to make a connection that doesn't exist.
So there stands the peeved wine connoisseur, sipping Cabernet from a plastic cup, one eye on the "delayed" rail board and one on the angry masses dialing their significant others to announce they will be late for dinner once again. ...

You know, that thought hadn't occured to me before but it sounds like the most visceral (and logical, if you ask me) response to the ever-frustrating delayed train.
A civilized response

Too bad it isn't legal in MA to sip wine from a plastic cup in a public place.
Yeah, it is too bad..

Though I prefer whiskey in a cup (maybe with a little vermouth and a maraschino cherry). That makes me happy during delays on the T...

... there is a fenced-in 'private' area at North Station in which one may drink.
Ah, alcohol. Is there no problem it cannot solve?
Ask for a Slippery Rail

North Station had all these posters about trains being delayed by "slippery rails". I thought it sounded like a mixed drink so when the bartenders were setting up (but not open yet) one day, I asked if they served them.
I wonder if they followed through on creating one?

Best way to placate angsty commuters AND balance the budget? A Bar Car on all trains. You can drink on the T ferries, why not on the commuter rail? It amazes me that they came up with T radio and missed Bar Car.

Some NYC commuter rail lines have them. Why not here too?
Sometimes You Need A Beer

I had been called back for a second job interview one afternoon. It was a pleasant but hot summer day, and I needed to get down to WeymouthPort from Charlestown at 4:30 pm for a family event afterward. I was also on the mend from a cycling accident where I broke my hand and ring finger.
After a 3 1/2 hour interview, I hopped the ferry to Long Wharf. I then boarded the ferry for the Fore River Shipyard, buying a beer when I bought my ticket.
On the top deck, I shed my business jacket that had been hiding the road rash and band aids and sipped away as we sailed past the Boston Skyline. Crap beer never tasted soooo good!
why not...
