Guy steals car in Hopkinton; entire town school system locked down

A Hopkinton parent forwards the note from the superintendent. School dismissals delayed an hour, even though there is no evidence the alleged thief is dangerous, let alone anywhere near a school:

Today, on Tuesday, March 11th at about 11:30 a.m., the Hopkinton Police Department informed the community that they were searching for a suspect who had stolen a car and may have broken into a home. While the areas surrounding the schools were searched, all buildings were ordered locked and no one was allowed to enter or exit.

Man, can you imagine that happening around here? Over a stolen car? Compare with what sent Boston Latin Academy into "safe mode" today.

The parent adds:

Provided they're telling us the truth -- that there's no reason to believe this guy was dangerous -- then locking down the schools, scaring the kids and disrupting the lives of parents makes no sense at all, unless you're a police or school official looking to cover your backside.

A bunch of airline passengers recently sued American Airlines for just that.

"Safety" trumps every other consideration these days. Eventually, we will all be locked in our own personal cells, where we can't catch diseases or be attacked by anybody else.

Boston has had some doozy quakes before. So why was I the one teaching a group of middle schoolers to duck under desks (as part of a presentation on how Mt. St. Helens changed one middle school kid's live ...)
