Where have you gone, Manny Ramirez, our Nation turns its lonely eyes to you

Peter is fed up:

... How could he decide to take a night off when the team, HIS team, was playing the Yankees, the red hot New York Yankees who, with the win, closed to within two games of Boston? I DO NOT KNOW THE ANSWER, but the club should (will?) have a sitdown with him and set him straight. They have to! Wait until you hear the boos later this afternoon. ...

When Boston Manager Terry Francona posted the lineup, he had Ortiz batting third and Ramírez slotted behind him in the cleanup spot. Francona said that the Red Sox told Ramírez to alert them if he could not play. Less than an hour after the lineup was taped to the clubhouse door, Ramírez told the bench coach Brad Mills that he needed another day off.

After Ramírez decided that he was unable to play, Francona said he and Red Sox management, including the principal owner John Henry, met with Ramírez. Francona said the Red Sox wanted to see how he felt before sending him to a hospital for magnetic resonance imaging tests on his knees. Francona said the tests were negative. link

"tests were negative" is not the same as "Manny isn't hurting too much to play". It just means they couldn't find anything they could test for that could account for the problems, or that he simply sprained his knee, it hurts, and it isn't thoroughly messed up and will heal.

Yes, he's paid a lot to do what he does. No, he doesn't have to bolster anyone's ego or collective ego at the expense of his well being.

...Manny played while hurt and muffed a key play?

I find it incredibly amusing how sports fans - usually people who do nothing more strenuous than hoist a beer during games - think they know more than the players, coaches, doctors, and managers who have access to real information.

And while I'm posting hypotheticals, how about if Peter calls me on Monday morning and I'll decide how I feel about his going to work!

I absolutely agree with you, DoodleBean.

The same type of people used to say the same type of crap about Roberto Clemente back in the day - calling him a hypochondriac along with other ridiculous assertions.

I, for one, would like to play an ode on my violin to management in this situation. Surely the sympathy play is well-deserved.

Well played, sirs. Well played.

Great Paul Simon plug. Does Manny deserve that sort of accolade, replacing the name of Joe DiMaggio? A bit of a difference in integrity levels, I'd say.

I'm a baseball fan, and a Yankee fan. What that means is, I don't deny the significance or history regarding the results of the '04 and '07 Fall Classics. But that's as close to a compliment as I'm willing to give. Especially '04. That was ... unspeakable.

Ah, the Sox just won the game(7/27). Too bad.

I wouldn't trade Manny Ramirez no matter how many people, twice his age and half his size, or fellow teammates he shoves around; or how often his knee aches, without a discernible injury. He plays a difficult left in Boston about as well as anyone, and no one in the world hits like him. No one. And, I would rest the guy if he says he needs rest. Tito did the right thing by having him evaluated; well, his knee anyway. Though he is obviously one of the most selfish people I've seen with that level of greatness. That also is too bad. It's all in how you're raised I guess.

But I still don't think Manny could muster the strength to personally manage the pressure that Joe DiMaggio killed everyday. Maybe David Ortiz.

Maybe Boston will mistakenly trade him for some bullpen. That would be great for NY!!

BTW, I interned in Boston while attending school in Providence 15 years ago, I worked on the airport and was staying in Roxbury, my kind of neighborhood...the pizza shop one block away wouldn't deliver near our building. I got to sit in a 5 1/2 hour traffic jam thanks to an accident in both the Callahan & Sumner. We were routed up into, is it Everette?, can't remember, little town north of Logan. The highway sort of crested, got a full view of a Boston Parking Lot, the size of all East Boston. I'm really glad I filled my car with gas that morning. Used to shoot over Melnea Cass Blvd to 93, 15 minutes at 6:00AM, never less than 2 hours getting back.

Heard you's built a new exit ramp or something to help with that. How's that working out?

GO YANKS!!!!
