Don't just blame the media for Manny Madness

Pink Hat Hell considers how Sox management always tries to destroy big-name players right before they get rid of them:

... By the time Derek Lowe was gone, you'd have thought the guy needed an elephant-sized dose of Lithium just to get out of bed in the morning. ...

Redsock explains how Jim Rice is a hypocrite, although one could argue he's only applying that old adage, "it takes one to know one," since he also shoved some guy a lot older than him.

Why would a team damage the reputation of someone they were trying to trade? They want to get the most in return, not the least! As for D-Lo and everyone else cited in the article, they didn't need the Red Sox to hurt their reputations. Their stats alone were enough.

Other teams don't usually care too, too much about how a player is characterized by the trading team. They're more interested in the stats the guy is going to bring to their ballclub.

However, the trading team's fans don't want you to give away their favorite player. Imagine if they tried to trade away Papi right now. There'd be bedlam in the streets and another innocent college-aged kid would die in the streets at the hands of the riot police (just a joke, people). Now, imagine if they started to put out to the news how Papi was kicking puppies, cheating on his wife, and spitting on the clubhouse towel boy. More fans would start to question whether keeping him is in the best interest of the team, etc. When they trade him now, no bedlam, no dead college schoolgirl. Ticket sales go up and the new guy's jersey is quickly adopted as a shining badge of "how baseball's done right!".

Actually, and elephant-sized dose of lithium wouldn't get you out of bed. It would make you have a seizure with severe convulsions and a headache, and a possibly fatal coma.

An elephant-sized dose of amphetamines would do the trick nicely.
