The Globe's Gordon Edes just reported that a deal has gone down with Manny Ramirez. Nick Cafardo reported that the Dodgers were Manny's believed landing spot.
Cafardo also reported that he thinks the Red Sox may have landed Jason Bay from the Pirates as part of a three-team deal between the Red Sox, Pirates, and Dodgers.
SI.com is also reporting that Manny has been dealt to the Dodgers.
Dan Shaughnessy must be pissing himself in fear at the prospect of losing his greatest target subject. What can he write about now? Youk's goatee-shaving method? Pedroia's oversized chin? Coco's cornrows?
I personally could care less about losing him; his time here was obviously done. But I hope he can take with him to LA some of the class exhibited by fellow former teammates.
Cafardo says we also gave up Hansen and Moss in this mess just to keep Pittsburgh happy. What the hell did the Dodgers put up? We better be getting more than just Bay by the time this is said and done.
It comes down to $$$. I think they would have loved to keep Manny if his price was not so high. The rest is all about the negotiations and posturing. I think we will miss him greatly in the cleanup spot.
Manny's options for '09 and '10 have been dropped, so he will definitely become a free agent after this season unless the Dodgers decide to sign him early. This from SI.com:
The Red Sox approached Ramirez in advance of their negotiations, and got the OK from Ramirez. He signed off on the paperwork, contingent upon the two $20-million team options for 2009 and '10 being dropped. The move will set the stage for Ramirez to become a free agent this winter.
If $7 saves you $120 minus the cost of your left fielder, and he can hit, wouldn't you do it? I think they were facing a no win contract negotiation with Manny and they knew it. This way, they get something.
I'd like to know where you come up with $120 million.
Manny is owed another $7 million on this year. Next year is an option year, meaning that we get first right of refusal to keep him around if we don't want him, but if we do, the cost is $20 million next year and a second $20 million for 2010 separately decided at the end of 2009.
We could have kept him around until the end of 2010 for another $40 million total if we chose OR we could have not taken the option and let him be a free agent and go somewhere else at the end of the season costing us nothing for 2009 or 2010.
We didn't have to negotiate a contract with Manny until the end of 2010 if we didn't want to.

According to Edes, via the Glob's Bats Blog "As part of the deal ... the Red Sox will pay the remaining $7 million of Ramirez's 2008 salary."
Which is what I said. We're paying him for the rest of the year to not be on our team. EPIC FAIL.

You're absolutely right. It must have been the heat. It cost the Sox $7 million, plus Manny's consent, to get something for him.
