A Suffolk Superior Court jury today found Ivan Sosa of Dorchester guilty of voluntary manslaughter for the stabbing death of a co-worker at Turner Fisheries on Sept. 16, 2006, the Suffolk County DA's office reports.
Prosecutors had charged Sosa stabbed Carlos Borrero, Jr., of Chelsea to death because Borrerro made fun of his attempts to date a waitress there and was talking trash about him behind his back. Prosecutors had sought a more serious second-degree murder charge against him. He's to be sentenced this afternoon.

Prosecutors said the 39-year-old Sosa grabbed a knife and stabbed Borrero repeatedly in the kitchen in front of other workers who tried to stop him.
The story here is how the jury decided on voluntary manslaughter instead of murder two. Sosa had malice in his heart.

Suffolk Superior Court Judge Linda Giles handed down the sentence; prosecutors had asked for 15-20 (and had he been convicted of second-degree murder, he would have gotten life, but with a chance at parole).
The victim's family members addressed the court before sentencing, including the mother of his son:

8-12 with no mention about when he's eligible for parole.
I also noticed that if he has been convicted on 2nd degree murder he would have gotten life and been eligible for parole in 15 years.
