He was pandering to a crowd of people using a symbol that he knew they would respond to. I think the Yankees fans, assuming they had any class, should be more upset then Red Sox fans about things like this. It was a pathetic attempt to connect with the crowd.
Im definitly not a huge fan, and dont foam at the mouth over these things, but I am still dissapointed when a local "hero" goes somewhere else and pretty much tosses his allegiance behind and embraces someone elses allegiances/morals for a day or night just for some cheap connections. It reminds me of when Romney would run all over the country telling everyone how aweful Massachusetts was when he was Governor, its just not cool. Your either a fan or your not, Im sure among sports nuts he pretty much has now lost his ability to call himself a real Red Sox fan without being questioned on it.

I couldn't say it better myself. If there's one universal constant among Red Sox fans, it's that they're above symbolism and cheap emotional ploys. Red Sox Nation is intellectual; if you want to win a Red Sox fan, you have to do it through his mind.
Dispassionate, evidence-based, thoughtful, judicious. These words echo up and down Brookline Ave. on game day. "Did you see that? When the homeless guy asked for a dollar, that guy in the Dice-K jersey entered into a detailed discussion of the public-policy merits of being a right-to-work state, and its concomitant effects on non-compete clauses! That's a true fan."

Your little rant missed my point. I was saying that from the perspective of someone who has lived in Boston and has alot of rabid sports fan friends. With some of these guys nothing gets them more riled up then seeing someone wearing a Red Sox hat or jersey just to impress them. Sure it works in the stadium, but if you dont happen to be there in the middle of a show it looks like just showmanship which is all it is.
Class doesnt always have to mean walking around in a fur coat with your nose up high by the way and be be relative.
So your point, then, is
Well, let's break it down:
1. Donnie Wahlberg is a showman.
2. Putting on the baseball cap of the local team is showmanship.
3. Sure, it works in a stadium.
4. He was, in fact, in a stadium.
5. But if you're not in the middle of a show, it looks like showmanship.
6. He was, in fact, in the middle of a show.
7. Did I mention that he's a showman?
It must be truly shocking to see a showman displaying showmanship during a show, when that sort of showmanship would look like showmanship if you weren't in the middle of a show.

Well you know, it wouldnt be a big deal if he wasnt always playing up his Boston roots. There are some people who are from Boston who dont make a big deal of it and it would be fine if they did the same thing but this guy always played on that. It just makes you feel like hes willing to sell you out at the first chance he gets for a cheap line of applause.
Some showmen still have their dignity and wouldnt do what he did. Im sure he only did it because he thought Boston would never find out... That is even worse, it would have been different if he did this on MTV or something as well, that would have taken guts.
