the guy is a class act. i know he had some marriage problems last year and with that came the worst slump of his career but give the guy a break. these guys pay their agents large sums to get them the most they can get.boras is the best/worst in the business. im sure varitek was told to sit back and let boras call the shots and now its blowing up in varitek's face.there are a number of players sitting out there waiting for fat contracts that arent coming this year.i think something is wrong with the economy.would you rather varitek signed with the tigers or yankees and got his swing back? if he hits 260-270 and catches the way he always has id be pretty happy to have him back on my team.F him? come on dude, are you really that emotionally involved? he is the greatest catcher in red sox history and im old enough to remember fisk, who was great. i also remember that fisk won 0 world series while mr. varitek has two.

and if you are not emotionally attached and know anything about catchers after the age of 35, all but about 4 have numbers that continue to go down. Varitek didn't have a bad year that he'll recover from. He's just old now. As hard as it is for people to understand, even if varitek comes back, the sox need a new long term solution. his numbers have been on the decline for several years now and that trend is going to continue.

catchers definitely do decline in their mid thirties but what is the alternative? i would love to see them find some young stud that could catch half the games while learning from varitek.im not saying they should give him a huge contract. maybe they could work out something similar to wakefield. he plays for a reduced price with the team having the option of retaining him each season at the same price. they were going to give tek 10 million in arbitration so why not offer him 10 over two years. cut back his catching time until he is the guy that catches wakefield once a week. he is the captain.

So you want the Sox to offer him a deal like Wakefield's? I'm sure the Sox would be happy to do so, but you're boy would probably scoff at the offer. He turned down $10 million for 1 year, and now you think he'll sign a $10M, 2 year deal? He's greedy, admit it and move on.

If the Red Sox offered him a bag of Dunkin' Donuts and a large Slurpee right now, Varitek would have to think hard about it. His only fit is back here in Boston because of what it would give Boston for him to go somewhere else (high draft pick) and what it would cost someone else due to his seniority in the league versus what they already have behind the plate. At this point the only thing Theo et al. have to consider is how demoralizing they want the offer to be. They're probably going to err on the side of caution and not make it so bad that he can't hold his head up in the locker room. He is still going to be the Captain of the team after all. I'm guessing $6M/yr and only 1-2 years. He turned down $10M under a completely different mindset, took a gamble on getting more, and lost. It happens sometimes, but by not getting an offer anywhere else, he's basically put the Sox back in the driver's seat in the negotiations. They won't be dicks because they respect him as a veteran player (as we all should, the man is amazing behind the plate and seemingly a pretty decent guy too), but there's no way they get close to $10M again without it being entirely based on incentives (like "hit over 0.250 and we'll throw in another 1.5 million for you").

I want Varitek to be the catcher of the Red Sox in 2009. But to hit .220 then expect a multi-year deal for big bucks is INSANE, not to mention ridiculously greedy.

How come Varitek can't sign the 1 year deal, hit .270 like you and all the other Varitek lovers think he will, THEN sign a multi-year contract?

Carlton Fisk never had Josh Beckett on his team, or Manny Ramirez, or Curt Schilling, or Jonathan Papelbon, or David Ortiz. Greatest catcher in Red Sox history? Wow, you need to get off his jock, man. And even if he WAS the greatest, he's not anymore. He's a .220, 37 year old catcher who wants to be paid like a .280, 30 year old catcher.

carlton fisk only had yaz, tiant, fergie jenkins, fred lynn, jim rice, rick buleson and quite a few other great ballplayers. im not on his jock, im just saying the he is worth 10 million over two years. i know he was stupid to turn down the 10 mil arbitration offer but he did so this is where we are now. even if he hits 310 next year i wouldnt give him any more than two years right now and in two years we hopfully have someone else behind the plate.so who is the greatest catcher in sox history?

Carlton Fisk, then Rick Ferrell. And catcher's one of the weakest positions in Red Sox history, so saying Varitek is #1, or #2, or #3 isn't saying much.

come on.the guy was only here a few years.his number is not even retired. i will give you the fisk argument. i was a kid when he played and i loved him.a friend of mine had his autograph on a chinese restaraunt menu, we used to sit around and stare at it like it was a relic.fisk was great but no rings.varitek has caught 4 no hitters and won two world championships. my point is that he is worth signing at a discounted rate. would you rather brad ausmus?
