It's DeLeo's world and Patrick is just living in it

House passes sales-tax increase by veto-proof margin.

Mike Ball asks that you call your legislators and tell them that's meaningless without reform: Don't let those clowns think they've done enough!

The Outraged Liberal says Patrick could win the war for losing this battle: Patrick either ultimately gets the reforms he wants from the legislature or he has a ready-made issue to use against Republican Christy Mihos next year:

... Higher turnpike polls become lawmakers' problems and they will have hell to pay for the next round of MBTA service cuts and fare hikes. Not to mention they will own the crumbling roads and bridges.

Patrick's popularity numbers may be in the tank, but no politician has ever gone wrong running against the legislature or Congress. The beleaguered Patrick has put an important downpayment on his campaign by taking a stand here. ...

Blue Mass. Group has the roll call vote.

So, you didn't do anything and now you're looking at a legislature run rampant with an increased sales tax and no real plan for spending that extra cash except to dump it into the same potholes that keep showing up because nobody's fixing their underlying problems.

Well, you can do something now. Tell your representatives that they're screwing up and had better reconsider overturning the governor's veto when it comes back to them.

* Find out who your representative is (put in your address and look for the "Rep in General Court" near the bottom)

* Call or send them an e-mail telling them that you disagree with the increased sales tax making sure to explain how their actions will influence your vote the next they are up for election.

There is still time to keep this from going forward if the Governor vetoes it and DeLeo loses nearly any votes at all. Convince your representatives that they've screwed up. Make them understand that you're willing to pay a little more at the pump for fixing things like the roads, road debts, and public transportation needs, but that you're not going to do that through higher taxes on your every day purchases!

Adam, I think you have Pyrrhic victory wrong in this one. Unless I'm misunderstanding you.

A Pyrrhic Victory's where someone wins a battle but weakens their position in the broader war as King Pyrrhus did against the Romans in the Pyrrhic War.

What I meant to say was that the Outraged Liberal's argument is basically: DeLeo may have won this battle, but Patrick could ultimately win the war. I've fixed the post to reflect that.
