Entire city to get recycling bins large enough to hold Julio Lugo by July
By adamg on Fri, 05/15/2009 - 7:28pm
The Jamaica Plain Gazette reports the city plans to roll out its 64-gallon mega-recycling bins to every neighborhood in July. With the new bins-on-wheels, residents can just stuff everything, from newspapers to plastics, in. The paper says residents who don't want to deal with recycling carts larger than Mini Coopers can ask the city to take them back after they're delivered and then get recycling stickers to use with a standard-sized trash can.

My neighbor attempted to
My neighbor attempted to recycle the old bins inside the new ones... I'm not quite sure what the point of them is but I appreciate that a lid will keep the light stuff from blowing away and becoming litter, although it will challenge the bottle hunters.
Good point about bottle hunters
I don't know about JP, but bottle harvesters are an institution in Cambridge.
In Cambridge, they touch only the open recycling bins.
I wonder how they'll deal with 64-gallon ones. Hopefully not by dumping them out or making lots of noise by sifting.
Also, hopefully this won't somehow result in injuries to bottle harvesters. I'm sure it's easier to dig around and avoid sharp objects in a small, open bin than it is in a large, deep can.
Compromise
We just leave our recyclables in a milk crate at the end of the stoop. Our trash and recycling don't get messed with and the gleaners take care of something we wouldn't bother to do ourselves.
Returnables
Stewart means to say we leave our RETURNABLES in the milk crate. My dad started the habit quite a few years ago, and it does seem to keep the gleaners from disassembling our trash bags.
Lugo
With 5 hits yesterday, Lugo I'm not worried about. Ortiz at 0 for 7 is another matter.
