The shame of Roslindale: City-owned Flaherty Pool is falling apart

Supporters of the Flaherty Pool, run by the Roslindale Community Center and funded by the city, have posted a three-part report on what sort of shape the pool and the pool building are in.

Among the highlighted problems: Foundation cracks, an inadequate and broken ventilation system, leaking ceilings, rust and peeling paint everywhere, not enough lockers, standing water in the basement, missing emergency lights, exposed wiring, ceiling tiles about to collapse, failing pipe insulation, broken and rusted doors. Repairs made to the bottom of the pool in April of this year are already failing - and are rusting and cracking.

Sad, but true. We were longtime members of the pool but decided to become members of the WR YMCA in January, for this very reason.

Not to worry. The new 'revenue stream' (e.g., the increase in the meals and hotel taxes) should cover all of these problems.

I took a look at that report and the pictures were abysmal! I can't believe it's even allowed to be open under those conditions. Doesn't surprise me though - promises from the Mayor's office are rarely honored!
