And it's only electronic - no more paper notifications.

It's really hard to remember my birthday.

The RMV has outsourced the service. Why not expand that into a general reminder service for stuff like anniversaries, dental appointments, etc.? Charge some annual fee. Voila: End of state budget crisis, thanks to the Registry of Motor Vehicles and Appointments.

When you complete the form, you end up at a "Thank You" page with an ad for Arbella Insurance.

While it is not a registry page - you are told, during the process, that you are leaving the registry's website - it does seem wrong.

since there isn't any chance of ever looking at my driver's license and noting the year of expiration.

All the same, one would think that the individual insurance companies and agents would see this as an opportunity to send you an "Extra Special Happy Birthday to one of our Treasured Customers" birthday card reminding you to renew.

Hmmmmm ...

I could have used this a few months ago. I could have sworn my license had a year to go, but nooooooo ...

But outsourced? I don't feel too good about having an insurance agency doing it.

that the RMV needs private sponsorship to do it? Oh wait, we're encouraging private enterprise by taking their ad revenue, so it must be OK (not).

Not to mention the implied conflict of interest by having this RMV service sponsored by an auto insurance company. Just like those ads from some company that sells and installs breathalyzer interlock devices that were constantally repeated on the RMV "information" boards in the 55 minutes I was waiting to renew my license last month.
