what i find interesting, as a state employee, is that my union never asked any of its members about concessions they would be willing to make. allegedly patrick was asking for voluntary furlough days.
if asked if i would take days without pay to save jobs, i would have answered yes.
instead, the union never asked (maybe patrick never really asked them? i dunno, just speculating here... my union is lame so it could easily be them...) and now we are in danger of losing a lot of jobs.
and losing bunker hill day & evacuation day. which is also interesting because those are promised in our union contract.
i would give 'em up in a heartbeat to save jobs. but i am seriously concerned about the way this is playing out. seems shady.
The union bosses probably don't want to get into the habit of making concessions. The leadership usually doesn't give a damn about the youngest members of the union and in this cases probably felt it was better to loose some members rather than have the majority give up perks. The 2,000 let go are probably wondering why they were paying dues this entire time, but since they have no recourse, no cares.
That doesn't seem to include every cut -- the numbers don't tally. Does anybody know if there is a place to see line by line what is being cut in the entire budget?

I think he's still looking for concessions
At least that's what I took from the WBUR link.
You might still have a chance to register your willingness to accept them. (Call your union rep?)
Solution
Even as a "dark blue" democrat, this is pretty necessary...

you can do a drill down and see it all...
... by going to the state budget website.
if you noodle through it, it shows all the cuts.
