Not loving the dirty water
By karenz on Thu, 10/29/2009 - 3:24pm
Anyone else getting this yellow-brown tinged water in their homes? We got some yesterday and it's still here today. I'd worry that it was something with our building in Jamaica Plain but I got the same creepy water yesterday at work in Brighton. I'm assuming (hoping) the water is still safe to drink and a result of the rain or something else seasonal that is going on. Any ideas or suggestions?

i noticed the water in all the toilets at work yesterday had that "grey-water" look... down in the theater district...
Clear water
I had clear water at home in Brighton (near St. Elizabeth's) this morning. No ideas as to what's going on with your water. Run it for a while and see if it clears out. They might have done two somethings coincidentally near both your house and work and disturbed the water mains.
Water heater
We had that problem a couple of years ago - turns out the water heater was about to go. Rust/silt junk builds up and causes water to come out brown - maybe?
Yeah, that kind of thing is
Yeah, that kind of thing is almost always an issue with the facility rather than the water supply. We got all new pipes in my neighborhood last year, so that would probably be the last thing I'd think about with strange water. As things stand, everything is clear and tastes good.
Hydrant flushing
It's probably something similar to the hydrant flushing described here.
pipe work in JP
There's been a bunch of pipe work in JP. For example, a bunch of streets off of S. Huntington, near the VA medical center.

I had it in JP (Forest Hills) too - I only noticed it in the toilet system though - no my other water supplies. It was gone today.
Did you call City Hall
Did you call City Hall and/or the Boston Water & Sewer Commission to find out?

here in Savin Hill, the water in my toilet had the very slightest grayish tint. I didn't think much of it.
Water-main breaks
Been a lot of them lately too. Stir up the pipes and you get all the junk that's settled.
Or, could be an insidious plot.
Thanks!
Thanks for all the helpful feedback! I'm about a mile south of Forest Hills. The water seems to be more normal now but it was a brownish-yellow color. Will keep the City department in mind to contact if it comes back. Hopefully it won't!
