No fare is fair
When you go, keep in mind that the T's agenda is all business and little vision. If you agree with me, propose that the T be fare-free.
The benefits in traffic, pollution, gas, and on and on would outweigh the commonwealth's cost.
Don't expect us to beg for the minimum possible increase with concomitant reductions in service. The funding and operations models are simply wrong.
We need to think about what's best for all of us -- long term and short. The only way to get people out of cars and onto trains and buses is to make it inexpensive, convenient and efficient. This is absolutely the wrong time to raise fares.
No fare is fair.
Why boycott/rally against fare hikes?
I think some people are confused as to why anyone would boycott the T to show support for the T as an alternative to driving.
First of all, remember: it's a one-day boycott. It's about saying, hey, this is our transportation system, not yours. The MBTA thinks it's doing us a favor by allowing us to attend "workshops" about fare hikes. The MBTA isn't doing us any favors. Let's let them know we're a significant variable in the equation.
Public demonstrations say: hey, you guys work for us, the taxpayers and the riders. We can act independently of the MBTA to show the LEGISLATORS our displeasure at how the system is funded, and how it is run.
So to the 32% of those who took the poll who think it's a good idea to do nothing, remember that it's not the MBTA we need to be bargaining with for lower fares, it's the MASS. LEGISLATURE that sets the budget and determines how it will be funded.
That's why it makes sense to demonstrate publically outside of the meeting on the sixth, and that's why we'll be out in Copley Square across from the Boston Public Library all day on June 6th with information on how we can stop an endless spiral of diminishing services and higher fares.
For more info on the boycott visit http://www.tboycott.com and for updates on the rally go to http://www.t-rage.com. Keep fares fair. That's all we're asking.
