Women Outdoors is coming (back!) to the Greater Boston Region
Women Outdoors, a non-profit organization dedicated to promote wilderness activities and competency in the out-of-doors, is excited to announce the re-establishment of a chapter in the Greater Boston area. Founded in 1980, Women Outdoors provides women with a structure for a national network of women who work and play in the outdoors, and encourages women to develop an integrated, environmentally conscious lifestyle and to support policies that preserve the earth’s natural resources and promote a strong environmental ethic.

The first Welcome Event to introduce Women Outdoors to the community will be held Saturday, September 16, from 9-12 at the Assabet River as we take part in the 20th Annual River Cleanup. Join us for some river stewardship as we join OAR (Organization for the Assabet River), for this annual clean-up day in Maynard. Work from shore or get in the water from 9-12, followed by pizza for all volunteers and a gentle Women Outdoors walk along a scenic part of the river. Women are invited to participate in both the cleanup and the walk or can do one or the other as they feel able. Other events coming up and to be scheduled include kayaking, hiking, orienteering, ice skating, biking, skiing and more—only limited by members’ imaginations! Debbi Wright, President of Women Outdoors, said that she is “thrilled to see four new regions forming in 2006: the Greater Boston chapter, the Finger Lakes and Adirondacks in New York, and central Pennsylvania.” Regional contacts for the Greater Boston chapter will be Lisa Vaas and Elaine Daley, both of Jamaica Plain. Ms. Vaas pointed to a Wikipedia definition of “Greater Boston” and said that “We are hoping to draw women from what Wikipedia defines as this region: from Worcester on up to Southern New Hampshire and all towns in between. Events will take place all around the region. We hope to start with one monthly event and grow to an event every weekend. We also envision our newsgroup as a forum for spontaneous activities, for when outdoors women are looking for companions for spur-of-the-moment outdoor activities."
