Patrick to deploy National Guard unit to Haiti

The Boston Haitian Reporter alerts us a National Guard battalion will head to Haiti in April to help with reconstruction efforts.

I'm not saying this isn't a worthwhile thing to do. I'm just surprised that the governor has the authority to order the NG to undertake missions outside the country.

Sounds like it got garbled in transmission. If there's a guard battalion deploying abroad, it'll be under federal command, although I'm sure that Patrick will do his best to maximize positive coverage within the Haitian community.
