Man sought for fatal East Boston beating in 2010

TorresPhotos from BPD.

A Suffolk County grand jury has indicted an East Boston man for the death of Michael Costa 13 months after Costa was beaten to the ground at a bus stop on Nov. 2, 2010. Boston Police and the Suffolk County District Attorney's office have launched a manhunt for Jean "Tyson" Torres Varga, thanks to a mistake by the Suffolk County Criminal Clerk's Office, which let him walk by mistake before his araignment.

Police say Costa and a friend were waiting for a bus on Meridian Street when Costa spotted Vargas and pointed him out to his friend because he knew the two had had words before:

Vargas allegedly overheard this exchange and approached the two men.

Evidence suggests that Vargas physically assaulted both men, knocking Costa to the ground. Vargas allegedly continued to kick and beat Costa, at one point even bracing himself with a nearby fence as he stomped on the man.

Costa was rushed to Massachusetts General Hospital with serious injuries. He remained hospitalized for the next 13 months, dying of complications from those injuries on Dec. 17, 2011.

Police say Vargas is about 5'5" and weighs about 175 lbs.

Innocent, etc.

The story is much more complicated.

A longtime well respected employee responsible for checking paperwork made a human error that was not caught by the person responsible (at the time) for checking her work one Bob DelloRusso. Coincidentally Bob is running against Hennigan and was Chief of Staff to former Speaker Sal DiMasi.

The first employee made a mistake because she missed the fact that the hyphenathed name of the individual was hyphenated in the wrong place so it got through the system. DelloRusso charged with signing off on the first employee's work either placed his faith in the longtime clerk and signed off on the release or he didn't care enough to double check the name on his own in the first place. So while a very human error was made it was in fact caused by the negligence of Hennigan's opponent not a result of any error on Hennigan's part
