Finally, we can put our long mooninite nightmare behind us

I know I'll sleep easier tonight, knowing that John Stossel has finally weighed in on the whole thing:
... The news media went wild, with television stations interrupting programs for alerts, and breathless TV reporters talking about the "terrorism threat." This went on all day. ...
Tough talk from a man who once did a breathless feature on dwarf tossing.
Oh, and there's now a support site for the two LiteBriters - Alas, no forum to discuss what they were doing videoing the emergency crews rather then telling them what that thing above Sullivan Square was.

taping the response
the reports i've read state that berdovsky got a call from someone saying that there was a police investigation in that location, and he went to check it out because that's more or less what he does--walk around the city and film things. he didn't realize they were dealing with one of the ads he had hung until he got there, and there's an e-mail/phone record that suggests he contacted the ad agency almost immediately. i don't blame him for not running up to the yellow tape and saying, "hey, guys, don't worry about that thing! i put it there!," especially given what's transpired. the agency supposedly told him to lie low and they'd take care of it, and they did--several hours later. this freaked him out, and he got in touch with people who knew about the ads in that interval and told them so. while choosing not to speak up was less than noble, it makes perfect sense that he'd have wanted to know he had the agency's backing before he called the police to admit to his role. i do think it would have been better for everyone if he or stevens had come forward and tried to explain things, but considering that the agency is now off the hook even after admitting culpability, i'd say his anxiety about doing so was more than justified.
