New sign of accelerating yuppification

Robert David Sullivan says you can tell the Boston neighborhoods moving from working class to white collar by the local planning groups calling for Trader Joe's.

As one example, he points to Roslindale, where some planning group reported "significant interest" in a Trader Joe's. Which, if it ever came to pass might put the Village Market out of business, which would be a shame because the neighborhood fought long and hard to get that market in the mid-90's.

I was in Village Market the other day, and I was not impressed. Although, I am partial to non-chain stores, there doesn't seem anything distinctive about it and seemed to have limited stock.

Village Market is like an over-grown bodega.

i don't know...i wouldn't be sad to see the village market go. it has a lot of potential but right now it's really nothing special. trader joe's is welcome in roslindale as far as i'm concerned, though i can't imagine where it would fit...

I like the market because it is basic - if you live near it, it means you don't have to drive all the way to West Roxbury or Hyde Park for a supermarket (having said that, however, we live almost in Hyde Park, so, um, I drive all the way to West Roxbury or Hyde Park most times, therefore please ignore everything I say about the Village Market).

As for Trader Joe's - the old Ashmont hardware store would be an ideal location, if they could figure out what to do about parking. The owners have been trying to sell that thing ever since they closed Ashmont - their problem is that they keep trying to sell it to people who want to do things like turn it into a self-storage warehouse, which the neighborhood then fights, so nothing ever gets done (at least the city's now in the process of seizing that sad abandoned gas station by the library).

I thought that building was sold last year to the owner of the Dunkin' franchise next door, with plans TBD.

Trader Joe's doesn't exactly have a good selection either. A fancier selection maybe. But, you are limited to one brand of food -- theirs.

I think the people that get involved with local planning groups represent the intrests of a small percentage of Roslindale residents. Most of us are too busy working and scrapping by to worry about whether a fast food place winds up in the center.

The Village Market is rad. I don't see any point in having another grocery store in Roslindale. Also, who goes to that cheese shop? West Roxbury residents perhaps?
