Notes from a new Rozzie resident

Blue Star Cafe: I'm a fan. It's good place to go on Sunday morning with the little guy. We never have a problem getting a high chair. I haven't had anything but pancakes in the three times I've been there but I've got no complaints.

Romano's (the pizzeria/taco stand) I had the sicillian which wasn't half bad, steak bombs were ordinary at best. There's gotta be a better place in Rozzie. Full disclosure: I have yet to go to Pleasant St but I am looking forward to it.

Has anyone gone to that little spanish restaurant on the corner of Beach & Washington? I'm kind of a connoisseur of good Latino food. (Oriental De Cuba here I come)

Not in Rozzie, but DeNo's on Centre Street in West Roxbury has very good pizza - and when you're done you can walk over to the playground at Billings Field on LaGrange Street (it's about a block away).

Supposedly John's Bakery in Rozzie Square has pizza to die for (you can eat it and then run it all off in the park across the street).

If you like Greek pizza, try Nick's up near the Burger King on Washington Street. Actually, even if you don't like Greek pizza, visit Nick's just to see their mural of the Phaeton myth. It's just not something you'd expect to see in your basic sub shop.

But yeah, you gotta get to the Pleasant Cafe first :-).

be sure to try the tacos at romano's--they're pretty authentic with lots of cilantro. such a funny mix of foods at that place but i like it!

the pizza at john's bakery is definitely good, too, though the hours are more limited (i.e. no late night pizza!).

Not necessarily the best places to go with kids, but (in my opinion) the best Roslindale restaurants are, in order:

Delfino's
Village Sushi
Sophia's Grotto

Himalayan Bistro in West Roxbury would also be a top contender if you include that in your geographic scope.

Good with kids:

The Real Deal (West Roxbury)
Dogwood Cafe (Forest Hills/Jamaica Plain)

Favorite area pizza: Sweet Tomatoes (Newton)

I find that Sophia's Grotto is very accommodating when it comes to children (as long as you're there on the early side). This is the restaurant that we find ourselves at the most frequently. I imagine that Village Sushi would be OK with kids, too. I agree that Delfino's is probably the best restaurant in Roslindale overall, and that it would probably not be the best place to take kids.

The Vegetable Masala at Himalayan Bistro is one of my favorite dishes from any of the local restaurants. The people who run the place are incredibly nice and they deliver (and quickly!)

The folks at Sophia's Grotto have always gone out of their way to make us feel welcome bringing our little guy, which we've been doing since he was months old.

One of the great things about Sophia's Grotto, this time of year, is the outdoor seating in the alley. We were there with our little guy on Sunday, and he played around while we read the paper and ate. They actually let us sit there and have some drinks and bread even though we happened by an hour before they opened.

You want acommodation for little kids? Can you top playmates and a basket of plastic dinosaurs? The owner's wife Sonia had her kids with her, and she invited our son to play with them, which he really enjoyed. When they left, he kept asking "Where'd Anthony go?"

A lot of restaurants try to make or fake a European ambience. Sophia's comes by it honestly: it's neighborliness from their family to ours.

Also has outdoor seating (in the same courtyard as Sophia's Grotto).

As another Rossie resident, I second the recommendation of the Real Deal in West Rox. It's a great place to go for a slice. My little guy (2 3/4) loves it.

Also, if you like Latino food, be sure to check out Pupusas Guanacas in Hyde Square (Jamaica Plain).

I believe you meant the Pleasant CAFE, and they serve (IMVHO) the best pizza in the city. Not especially kid-friendly, but not a place you couldn't take one, either.

I hear they have great fried clams but every time I've gone there they haven't any! So I get the chicken parm which is good :-)

Whenever we go, the place is usually full of 'em - it can be loud and rambunctious, so nobody'll notice your kid being, well, loud and rambunctious :-). Not sure they have any highchairs, though.

He also eats a lot.

And occasionally likes to throw his food.

Pizzeria Uno in Dedham. They also have outdoor seating, right next to the Mother Brook.

Oh, and JP Licks in, well, JP - complete with a little chalkboard area for kids (as well as a lifesize fiberglass cow).
