State Police said today they've cited now former Patriots player Brandon Spikes on charges he rammed into the back of an SUV on I-495, injuring the three people inside early Sunday.
Specifically, Spikes is charged with failure to stay within marked lanes, speeding, operating a motor vehicle negligently to endanger and leaving the scene of a personal-injury crash.
Responding troopers located the Maybach with significant front-end damage in the median off the northbound side of Route 495 shortly before 3:30 a.m. on June 7. The driver was not with the vehicle. Before he fled the scene, however, he was contacted by the Mercedes onboard assistance service, which had detected a crash and called the vehicle. During that call, the driver reported that he had struck a deer.
When troopers responded to the abandoned car, they found no evidence of a deer strike on or around the Maybach. Around the same time, also on Route 495 north in Foxborough, troopers responded to the Murano, which had pulled over into the breakdown lane. The vehicle showed evidence of being struck from behind.
The three victims - a Billerica couple and their 12-year-old son, were treated and released at an Attleboro hospital.
Innocent, etc.

Who was driving for sure? Surely no deer hair or blood found. Did the car airbags ever inflate?

Fleeing the scene is one way to avoid an OUI...

The car is registered to you. You answered the phone when OnStar called, so there's bound to be a recording of your voice. There is exactly a 0.00% chance of not getting caught. Why would you abandon the car? Because you're intoxicated, and you'd rather trade a leaving-the-scene charge for an OUI? The OUI charge carries lower fines and less prison time, unless you're a repeat offender. How dumb do you have to be to think this is a good idea?

If someone is intoxicated, are they really capable of contemplating the options between OUI and leaving the scene?

Intoxicated doesn't mean incapacitated... people's judgment may be impaired, but they can still think and make decisions...
How dumb is Brandon Spikes?

Well, he's a professional athlete who attended the University of Florida. You take a guess.

Throughout this entire series of stories, has the actual human being Brandon Spikes himself made a single appearance or statement (even through a lawyer or other spokesperson)? I can't seem to remember any. Who is this guy, why wasn't he immediately found/contacted/detained/arrested by the police, why does it sound like, a week later, he still hasn't been, and where is he now?

Hey, that applies to about 70% of Massachusetts drivers!

Sounds a bit under-reported to me. More like 85-90%. ;)
