Dan Grabauskas says this sort of thing doesn't happen
By adamg on Tue, 05/22/2007 - 9:15pm
Todd reports he puts his monthly pass in the card reader and a guy rushes by him and crashes through. And then he's forced to do the same basic thing because the T's computers require a 20-minute wait between pass use.
Meanwhile, Lis Riba wonders if T honcho Grabauskas might have a closer touch with T reality if he actually took the T.

I had the trailer last week
A guy was standing at one of the machines - right next to the turnstiles. It looked like he was buying a ticket, so I didn't think much of it. I flashed my card and walked through, the dude trailed right behind me.
I'll be honest, I've ridden public transportation in several big cities and I've never seen the fare jumping at any of those places like I've seen here. The system seems ripe for abuse.
Trailing
I've sometimes been forced to trail when my monthly pass doesn't work and there are naturally no MBTA personnel around. It is alarmingly easy. And what with the no MBTA personnel around, very low risk for someone doing it nefariously. I can't imagine that fare jumping isn't far worse than it was before Charlie. From trailing, to the rampant disregard for fares on the Green Line, to people holding open gates from the otherside, there are so many problems that never existed before and only exist because of the design of the new system.
