UPDATE: Traffic is now blocked all over for miles.
Firefighters are in the O'Neill Tunnel battling a fire in a garbage truck that is sending smoke up through the ventilation shaft the InterContinental Hotel is built around. The hotel itself is not on fire.

are showing up more than an hour late to pick up the kids from school. I knew something was up when 10 minutes before dismissal there were more than a dozen buses less than usual clogging up D Street and environs.

The windows around my office got real dark. I thought it was fog until I looked.

I wondered what it was like inside the tunnel.. if it was black coming out the vents.. I can't imagine what it was like in the tunnel. (and the SMELL.. OMG I bet it was horrendous)
What's funny is.. coworkers thought the intercontinental was on fire. Until I explained that the hotel was built around the vent system for the tunnel. Most didn't know that...

Has some great photos of the truck. They towed it to South Bay and have photos of the trash continuing to smolder and then erupt in flames (again).
