Rhea Becker doesn't like little balls:
... It's a dumb form of bowling that we have here in Boston; it's impossible to get a strike. ...

... get it.

(I love Rhea, so nothing personal against her. It's just that an opposing view seemed called for and I had one handy in my archives.)

Small ball = more fun for all!
Ever try to take a six year old for standard bowling? How about a pack of 5 to 7 year olds for a birthday party?
Doesn't work too well.
With candlepin, anybody can fling that thing and hit pins, yet it is tough to hit all the pins! Candlepin serves bowlers with a wide range of abilities, and that alone makes it simply a blast.
I grew up way west of woostuh and I can appreciate the big balls bowling. But the big ball lanes have been progressively altered for maximum strike zone making it increasingly way too easy to get strikes and damnit, no fun! Add in the "you must be this large to handle your balls" factor (not to mention holes that are so unfriendly to busted fingers with extra wide knuckles) and it loses it's appeal.
There is nothing like candlepin for a game that all can play and all can have fun, even if you are 4 and tiny or 90 and arthritic.
if only...
duckpin bowling was more widely available.
