I'd stay out of Tom English's in Southie if your not from Southie; Wicked Townie bar and the locals (including the bartenders) DO NOT enjoy seeing yuppies stroll in with their peacoats and dress pants on
Another anti-SB comment on this page. I'm not sure exactly why it seems to be a somewhat constant theme here. But we can save that for another time.
But I'd like to say as a guy who likes to have a beer at Tom English's and a born and raised resident of South Boston that I have not witnessed anything that you mentioned.
That bar, probably more than any other in the neighborhood has an interesting mix of new and old. Like anywhere else, be polite and friendly and guess what? You get it back in return. To the person looking for a place to shoot pool, try English's. As far as parking around there; forget about it!
I go to English's more than I'd like to admit. There's always yuppies in there and I can't remember the last time I saw anything that resembled a confrontation.
I haven't been for a long time, but I love the Drinking Fountain. Generally avoided by the folks who use JP as a staging area for a few years between college and the burbs, it's like stepping into a time machine + it is guarded by wooden bears. What's not to love?
Flat top Johnnies in Kendall has a bunch. The Silhouette in Allston has one and you can sign up for the winner. Tom English in Dorchester is a little more at ease.

If you shoot pool no one
If you shoot pool no one bothers you. If you act like a douche bag then that's a different story.
