I'm fairly certain I've seen them in Shaws.

If you're talking about Hummel's delicious spicy hot dog I've never seen them outside of Connecticut. Not even sure they make it far from the Hummel Bros store in New Haven. My grandfather gets them every year for the 4th. It's amazing how little known these dogs are. It's hard to even find a google image result that does them justice.

I'm pretty sure the original poster was referring to the plain franks with red casings that are unique to Maine. I'm interested to learn about yet another New Haven food oddity though. I need to check this out next time I'm there.

Allegedly Roxie's in Quincy carries Hummel's, though I've never seen them in stock there (dad is from New Haven, saw it in their weekly ad once but they didn't have any when we stopped there). You can order directly from them them online.

If you are heading West, every Stewarts store I've ever been to has them "cooking" in the hotdog machine every day. You'll need to go to the Albany area or Vermont to find Stewarts.

Take the NorEaster from North Station to Portland. Walk around, eat, drink, buy hot dogs and ice cream... get back on the train and return to Boston, voila!

...I thought you were talking about Coney Island Hot Dogs, which got me very nostalgic for those delicacies! I used to get them at a little hole-in-the-wall takeout joint in Somerset, MA, maybe 45 years ago. Do they still exist in these parts? Not the sort of thing one could order online, alas, but are they still common/popular elsewhere?

I remember the Somerset one well. The original owners sold the mini-chain a while back. Two outlets survive: one in Attleboro and one in Taunton.

Fall River still has three: Nick's, J.J.'s, and Roger's.

Greg's in Worcester used to be my closest spot for a Coney Island dog fix. Now I go to Wuburger in N. Woburn; they're also opening a second location in Inman Square.

Thank you -- I never would have remembered the name of that joint, but I can surepicture it! Those dogs were great, and dirt cheap, as I recall. I grew up in Somerset but no ties down there nowadays, but if I ever make it down to Fall River, I'll have to check out your tips. Thanks!
