Drew Starr asks:

Does anyone in Boston or within delivery distance of Back Bay make a patty melt on par with Friendly's?

Tasty Burger has one.

tasty burger is not tasty

Friendlys was good but I can make one just as good

A cooked burger between two slices of american cheese and 2 slice of slices of bread slathered in butter grilled for a few minutes on each side.

Yum. Now I want one...

n/t

gotta fry the onions up in the butter

Grilled (preferably approaching caramelized) onions are a requirement for a Friendly's-caliber patty melt. Marble rye is a big plus too.

American cheese for a patty melt?

Swiss!

goes to Friendly's for the food?

A real patty melt includes sauteed onions and thousand Island dressing

The hubby and I were driving home and I said "too bad we don't have a Friendly's in the neighborhood anymore because I could really go for a cheeseburger and fries."

My nominee for a comparable is the 99 Restaurant (Charlestown location is likely closest to Back Bay), and I'm sure at least one of the delivery apps could accommodate.

Hub Pub on Province Street...also a great spot if you want crinkle fries. And who doesn't want crinkle fries? DoorDash delivers for them.

Has a burger melt that is like the adult version of the old Friendly's staple.

EDIT: Oh, just read the comment above mine. Tell Ralphie I said "hi" and that he's an arse.

Has an excellent classic patty melt that travels well during delivery. I also second the patty melt at Zaftig’s

I just had one of the best burgers in my life at B-Good on Summer St. And I used to love Friendly’s burgers, back when there was a Friendly’s near me. It looks like both DoorDash and GrubHub will deliver.

But after a little poking around, I found that the once great pancake house is now down to only two locations, and neither location has a patty melt on its menu. The Woburn location was one of my haunts when I was in my late teens and early twenties, they had a great patty melt.

I weep a little when I go by the Bickford's on Montvale Ave. Spent so many post-club late nights there.

Its all so different now. They've moved away from the greasy spoon menu. Tbh not sure why they are around..

Grilled rye, grilled onions, Thousand Island dressing. A bit far for delivery, but.

This will probably get me discharged from the Headline Readers Cadet program at WBZ, Adam, but... by way of full disclosure (and via Colin Mochrie's Wrong Emphasis Theater) - I must admit that I first misread the headline as meaning that a Friendly's-caliber patty had melted near Back Bay.

I had a brief vision of a Big Boy statue standing in the median of Dartmouth Street, with a captured moment in time view of a liquefied burger spilling off of his serving platter. Sort of Andy Warhol meets Salvador Dali.

Friendly quality only requires a hot plate.
