Gary at Gary's Liquors on VFW Parkway in West Roxbury reports:

  • reduced plastic bag use by 100%
  • Paper bag use was reduced by 78%
  • 99.8% of the people were understanding and only a few were upset.
  • I think it will only be a matter of time until everyone gets used to bringing reusable bags when shopping.
  • I was truly shocked and encouraged as to how easy people seemed to accept it. Congratulations on this first step to help save the planet.

Boston's ban on thin plastic shopping bags starts at city stores tomorrow, which means you'll either have to bring your own bags or get charged 5 cents for each of the thicker plastic or paper bags the stores will offer as an alternative. Read more.

WFXT reports Mayor Walsh has signed a City Council proposal that will prohibit local stores from using those thin plastic bans and will require a 5-cent fee for recyclable bags made of thicker plastic or paper. Read more.

The City Council today unanimously approved a measure that would ban thin plastic shopping bags and enact a 5-cent fee on paper bags and thicker plastic bags, as a way of reducing litter, helping the environment and curbing the use of the oil required to make them. Read more.

I just discovered today that Roche Bros. in Westie will no longer accept plastic bags for recycling. Is there anyplace else? Online searching brought up Targets and and a place on River Street in Hyde Park as the 'closest' options.

The City Council on Wednesday considers a proposal by councilors Matt O'Malley (West Roxbury/Jamaica Plain) and Michelle Wu (at large) to ban most plastic bags in Boston and to let stores charge 5 cents for paper or reusable bags - or plastic bags that can be composted. Read more.
