A no longer cocky man who thought he could get away with overcharging desperate hospitals for N95 masks in the spring of 2020 on the mistaken belief that was at worst a civil infraction, has agreed to plead guilty to the criminal offense of conspiracy to commit price gouging in violation of the Defense Production Act, the US Attorney's office in Boston reports. A Beverly pizza-shop owner who got $680,000 in federal Covid-19 relief funds based on applications with inflated employee counts, then used the money to jump from pizza making to alpaca farming, was sentenced to two years in federal prison this week for his wooly fabrications, the US Attorney's office announced. A federal magistrate judge today dismissed most of a lawsuit by 20 nurses, technicians and other workers at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and related institutions over their firings for refusing to get Covid-19 shots in 2021. Read more.

A federal judge this week sentenced Loc Vo, 56, of Brighton, to two years behind bars following his admission that he used much of the $1.5 million he got in federal Covid-relief funds to invest in a stocks rather than the food-truck and publishing-tech companies he claimed he would use the money to support. A federal appeals court has ruled that Sen. Elizabeth Warren has as much of a right to complain about anti-vax books as anybody else and has rejected a bid by Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and two other anti-vaxxers to make her say she's sorry she asked Amazon to stop promoting it. Read more.

Covid-19 isn't dead yet: WFXT reports Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center yesterday reported a "recent outbreak of Covid-19 among staff and patients." The patients were put into an isolation ward and, at least around them, the hospital brought back the universal masking requirements it gave up along with other hospitals last month.

A woman who faces a misdemeanor larceny charge over the body-worn camera she says an officer managed to drop while pushing her out of the way of Mayor Wu's car outside the mayor's Roslindale home during an early morning Covid-19 screaming protest has sued the city, the mayor, all the judges who sit at West Roxbury municipal court and a clerk magistrate there for violating her civil rights. The owners of five North End restaurants who claimed a fee only North End restaurants had to pay to serve diners on public property was proof Mayor Wu hates White Italian men, even though two of them are women and another of Hispanic origin, this week asked a federal judge to let them drop their lawsuit over the fee. The Boston Public Health Commission announced today that it's shutting its vaccination sites at the Hyde Park community center and the Fiorentino center in Allston and the Lena Park CDC in Dorchester on May 13, because so few people are now showing up for shots. Read more.

The Supreme Judicial Court ruled today that Holyoke Solders' Home Superintendent Bennett Walsh and Soldiers' Home Medical Director David Clinton will have to stand trial for elder neglect for crowding infected patients together with vulnerable, non-infected patients in the early days of the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, leading to an unusually high number of deaths. A federal judge earlier this month dismissed a lawsuit by six Boston University students over what they claimed was the inferior education they got after the school shifted to online classes as the pandemic erupted in the spring of 2020, in part because there was no way that BU could have foreseen a global pandemic would effectively shut down the entire state.
