Boston Globe oped article illustrated with an AI-generated X-ray image showing a wrist with three, rather than two, bones

A week ago, some editor in the Globe's oped department decided to illustrate an opinion piece about health-care rage with an X-ray of a clenched fist. So the editor went to Adobe's image library, found a whole series of AI-generated "skeleton fist" images and downloaded the coolest looking one. Read more.

Gremlins Traffic Light Scene

One approach rejected by Boston officials.

Boston, which has some of the worst traffic congestion in the world, has adjusted the timing of lights at four intersections in the Fenway, Mission Hill and Jamaica Plain through the use of a Google-based AI application to improve traffic flow- and could extend the application to even more intersections. Several of the nation's largest record labels today sued Suno, a Cambridge firm started by AI gurus whose offering lets users create their own songs - based, the labels charge, on their copyrighted work. Read more.

Robert Ambrogi gets the scoop that the judge in a Norfolk County lawsuit has sanctioned a lawyer because at least four briefs his office submitted in one particular case were based in part on citations made up by an AI program about cases that never actually happened. Read more.

The Daily Free Press reports the Boston University Center for Computing and Data Science's new policy is that students can use AI "if they properly credit the tool and include an appendix showing where and how AI tools were used." It does quote one lecturer, though, who feels AI is sort of like calculators were back in the day: It's OK for advanced students who already have the basics down, but intro students shouldn't use it to get answers instead of learning those basics first.
