So many pumpkins, but here's some time to get rid of them in a more environmentally friendly way: The city of Boston Zero Waste team, Boston Green Academy, the South Street Youth Center and Mothers Out Front will hold a pumpkin-smashing and composting event at the English High School track, 144 McBride St. in Jamaica Plain, between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. this Saturday. The Globe interviews a Revere man who has what is now a 500-lb. pumpkin that he plans to hollow out and use to paddle across Boston Harbor, from Jeffries Point in East Boston to the Fish Pier in South Boston.

We haven't been keeping up with our Concord news, so we were shocked yesterday when we made our annual trek to Arena Farms to learn the place was closing forever on Oct. 31:
Boston set the new world record tonight for simultaneously lit jack o' lanterns, with more than 30,000 fired up on the Common (so take that, Keene, NH). We, of course, simply could not risk missing the record - gosh, it feels good to live in a world-class city again!
