BFD has requested water-tank brush-fire trucks from DCR because both of Boston's trucks are involved with the Marathon.

Major deer spotted at the Roslindale Wetlands off Weld and Walter streets, near the Arboretum. He's also been spotted at Stony Brook (at the intersection of Washington and the parkway, no less), so don't be too startled if you see this huge woodland creature bounding through your backyard some evening.

Fire in Stony Brook Reservation

Boston firefighters are in Stony Brook Reservation on the West Roxbury end battling a three-alarm brush fire. Jan watched the rising smoke from the Hancock building in the Back Bay.

Stony Brook is one of three areas in Boston particularly prone to brush fires - the other two being the marshes along the Neponset River in Dorchester and the Back Bay Fens along the Muddy River.

The state Department of Conservation and Recreation has agreed to put up money to study how to turn the long closed Thompson Center on the Hyde Park side of Stony Brook Reservation into a dog park large enough to have separate play areas for large and small dogs and walking trails for pet owners who want to get in a bit of exercise.

At nine acres, the proposed dog park would dwarf similar facilities in the rest of the city.

A man with three drunk-driving convictions under his belt wandered away from the car he'd just flipped in Stony Brook Reservation, his companion dead inside, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office charges.

West Roxbury District Court Judge Debra Shopteese agreed with prosecutors to set Jeffrey Mason's bail at $500,000 at his arraignment today.

Turtle Pond in the fog

Turtle Pond in Stony Brook Reservation was completely still in the fog this morning. From the dock on the parkway side of the pond, you could barely make out the dock on the other side; the trees there cast a dark gray reflection on the water.

Meanwhile, Adam Shutes walked onto the dock at the Jamaica Pond boathouse this morning:

This afternoon, somebody called police to report a coyote was just lounging on her rear porch on the Arborway up near Centre Street in Jamaica Plain

Shortly before 7 p.m., a woman called in from one of the paths in Stony Brook Reservation near the George Wright golf course on the Roslindale/Hyde Park line: She was walking her dog when she noticed two coyotes were following them. Before police could arrive, however, two men in the area spotted her and escorted her to safety. No word if either of them was named Elmer.

We live in the largest city in New England, and yet, around 10:15 a.m., I had to hit the brakes to avoid plowing into a buck bounding across the Dedham Parkway near the entrance to Georgetowne in Hyde Park. Antlers and everything.

Tom O'Gara reports he saw one on Enneking Parkway around 1 a.m.
