Boston Police report arresting the man they say sent a woman to the hospital with life-threatening injuries at Boylston and Charles streets yesterday afternoon after he crashed into a large granite pillar, showering her with heavy debris. Read more.

Smashed up truck at the Public Garden

Update: Suspect arrested.; friends set up GoFundMe page for victim.

The driver of a pickup truck slammed into a granite pillar along the edge of the Public Garden at Boylston and Charles streets around 4:30 p.m., seriously injuring somebody who was walking there at the time and doing major damage to the truck and the pillar. Read more.

The Boston Fire Department reports no injuries after a two-alarm fire broke out around 7:30 a.m. at 98 Charles St., at Pinckney Street. Firefighters had to rescue some residents via ladders thrown up against the five-story building.

Damage was estimated at $500,000.

Croquet in the Public Garden

A roving UHub photographer captured the scene this afternoon. OK, no, we have no idea when these folks got their croquet set. On the one hand, it's almost charming, and we're hope the holes they left in the grass of the Public Garden did no permanent damage. On the other hand: Jesus, have you guys not seen the news for the last month?

The Beacon Hill Times reports that the group that bought several dive bars last year is now planning to turn the Beacon Hill Pub into the sort of high-end dining spot the nobs of Beacon Hill have come to expect. They're working with the former owner of Lala Rokh to find a suitable operator - and are also looking to convert the apartments in the building into "executive suites" for business people in Boston for awhile.

Bad sidewalks on Beacon Hill: Watch out

Shamus Moynihan reports these signs lined Charles Street tonight, no doubt industriously placed there by the proprietors' loyal manservants, who seem to have been unaware that the signs seem to indicate the Proprietors are actually ordering people to plunge to the ground.
