Not the most dramatic sunset, but still a pleasant way to end a warmish day at the giant dog park that Millennium Park in West Roxbury seems to have become (it was amazing how many people were there at sunset with their dogs today).
Dave Atkins attended the funeral for Robert Moore, his former Needham neighbor bludgeoned to death last week:
... In that crowd today, the emotion of grief--but also love--was overpowering. I don't believe we should measure our success in life by the type of funeral we receive, but the power of feeling in that room quietly spoke volumes of a life well lived and well appreciated. ...
And if you do, don't change into a business suit in the restroom.
And if you do, don't go next door to CVS before finishing your meal.
If you do these things, Needham police could arrest you for "disorderly conduct".
When he lived in Needham, Dave Atkins lived next door to Bob Moore, that guy who was murdered on Friday. Atkins writes about him:
... He let me borrow his snow thrower during the winter and we would chat about stuff out there on weekends doing yard work. He was a great guy. ...
Last night, at the end of the 11 o'clock newscast, Jack Williams answered viewer e-mail. One was from a woman who wondered why the TV crews went berserk covering that Needham murder but don't seem to show a similar amount of urgency in covering murders in inner-city Boston.
Williams, in that stentorian voice of his, said Channel 4 went into Crisis Emergency Mode because Needham schools were locked down and the station will always play up any story involving a possible public-safety issue.
UPDATE: The guy in the pizza shop didn't have a gun.
The Needham Times pieces it all together: Contractor charged with bashing poor old guy's head in (and trying to do the same to his daughter), found off 128 by State Police - tying up traffic, of course - even as Needham police were shutting down downtown Needham and locking kids in local schools due to an alleged crazy man with a gun in a pizza parlor on Great Plain Avenue.
Can imported beetles help beat back the purple loosestrife that, while pretty to look at, is choking local wetlands? Jennifer Forman Orth reports on a field trip by the state Purple Loosestrife Biocontrol Project to Cutler Park on the Dedham/Needham line (at Great Plain Avenue off 128). Workers released 7,500 Galerucella beetles, which just loves them some purple loosestrife:
Jo pays her respects to the condemned Thursday's dinner at Owen's Poultry Farm in Needham today:
... At the front of the line I held up my slip, he glanced at the paper and yelled out back, "8 pound breast". I wondered how many young guys have worked there and sniggered at the annual turkey day rush. ...
On the one hand, Tim admires the graffiti tagger who has gotten his giant "Syms" on locations that are obviously difficult to reach - such as the side of the I-93 upper deck.
On the other hand, Tim wishes the guy would knock it off already:
... There's a lot of graffiti out there that actually makes things look better. This doesn't. This is just about ego, and Syms should be ashamed rather than proud.
You know, if there's one thing my daughter doesn't get enough of, it's advertising. Why, she must spend 30 minutes each day on a school bus with nothing to do but look out the window or talk to other students.
A job posting on Boston Craigslist led me to Bus Radio of Needham, which hopes to end this problem. Starting this fall, the company will beam "a national radio program" at students in school buses in participating school districts.
On Bostonianne, Annie provides a recap of a painful round of after-work drinking with co-workers in a Newton restaurant that includes the best description ever of Needham:
Newton's slightly sluttier younger sister
Raptor perched on the weathervane atop Needham Town Hall today; while it was there, a flock of pigeons, escorted by a couple of crows and seagulls, kept flying around, no doubt outraged that its normal perches atop Town Hall had been usurped. Can anybody tell from the photo just what sort of bird that is?
Below the weathervane is a large clock that proves the old adage about every clock being right at least twice a day:
Maybe the person in the minivan on 128 that Tim didn't see as he was changing lanes will read his post on Why I didn't see you this morning:
