Former People's Federal Savings Bank torn down

Developer Gary Martell had his crew tear down the former People's Federal Savings Bank on Centre and Park streets in West Roxbury this morning, in preparation for the 21-unit condo building he still needs BPDA approval to build. Read more.

Pennrose, the company currently turning a former middle school in Hyde Park into New England's first LGBTQ-centered senior-citizen apartment building, says it will shortly file detailed plans to turn the former Blessed Sacrament Church on Centre Street in Jamaica Plain into a new moderate-income housing complex with performance and community space. Stop-work order posted outside demolition site

Friday, one day after a contractor demolished the old Keith House on Centre Street, ISD issued a stop-work order rescinding the permission it had granted Tuesday for the work.

Developer Gary Martell tore down the house, built in 1839, to make way for a 21-unit condo building he wants to build. He also plans to tear down the former People's Federal Savings Bank building next door, although he has yet to receive permission from the BPDA to actually put up the condos.

A contractor for local developer Gary Martell's CAD Builders this morning tore down the Greek-revival Keith House on Centre Street to make way for a 21-unit condo building - assuming the project is approved by the BPDA - just two days after ISD issue a demolition permit. Read more.

The Zoning Board of Appeal today approved plans by Chase Bank to add a drive-up ATM to the new bank branch it's building where the BP gas station used to be on Centre Street at Belgrade Avenue. Read more.

Centre Street between Jackson Square and the Monument at South Street will become a giant block party - and shut to vehicles - between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Sunday as part of the city's Open Streets program.

Drivers will be able to cross Center at Green and Myrtle streets and Boylston and Moraine streets, but don't even think of trying to turn onto Centre then. Cars parked on that stretch of Centre will be towed starting at 1 a.m.

Mayor Wu today announced plans to turn Dartmouth Street in front of the Copley library into a pedestrian area between June 7 and June 17th - in a pilot that could lead to the block being shut to traffic permanently - and to re-create the Newbury Street open-streets pedestrian program on long stretches of Centre Street in Jamaica Plain one day in July, Blue Hill Avenue in Grove Hall in August and Dorchester Avenue in September. Westbury Restaurant on Centre Street

Update: The new owner is Erdi Kembora of West Roxbury.

The yellow sign above the restaurant name says it all: On May 28, the Westbury Restaurant, next to where the bowling alley used to be before the post office moved in, gets a new owner - longtime owner Antonios Sevastos is retiring after serving up breakfast there for more than 30 years. Read more.

Trash at CVS on Centre Street in Jamaica Plain

From one of the 311 complaints.

Over the past three weeks, a disgusted citizen has filed five separate 311 complaints about trash in the parking lot of the CVS on Centre Street at South Huntington Avenue in Jamaica Plain. And the city has closed each complaint with a note that a ticket has been issued "for loose trash and debris."
