The BPL's posted sketches by Robert McCloskey as he prepared the famous children's book, from studies of ducks (lots and lots of studies of ducks) to drawings of the Public Garden and the nearby areas of Beacon Hill.

Ducklings

The annual Make Way for Ducklings parade wound its way around the Common and the Public Garden today (yeah, I don't know why it went that way instead of up and down Beacon Hill, either), ending, of course, by the ducklings statues.

It's one of Boston's most endearing celebrations - the annual Make Way for Ducklings parade from the State House to the Public Garden. Today was an almost perfect day for a waddling procession - the only problem was it was so warm some kids were getting out of their costumes even before they made the turn from Beacon Street onto Joy.

Christine Koh reports that when she was strolling through the Public Garden with her daughter Laurel the other day, she told Laurel how glad she was that Pack had been reunited with his family after having been ducknapped.

Laurel, 5, was aghast at the thought that one of the ducklings could go missing, so when they got home, she composed a letter to Boston Police with a suggestion on how to keep it from happening again.

Quack!

It was Cute Overload today as scores of little (and some not so little) ducklings and a scattering of Officer Mikes waddled in the annual Make Way for Ducklings parade from the Common to the Public Garden by way of Mt. Vernon and Charles streets on Beacon Hill.

Quack!

There is just something irresistibly cute and quintessentially Bostonian about little kids dressed up like ducks for the annual Make Way for Ducklings parade through Beacon Hill. And every year, there's always one kid dressed like a giant ball of feathers.

A newspaper photographer asked the cop below for his name. "Officer Mike" he said. No, really, she replied. Officer Mike will do, he told her, as he continued to pose with the ducklings crossing Beacon Street.

Quack, quack!

It's a tale of loss and redemption, and it would make one helluva video game.
